Hi  @owd potter, if you mean the brown stuff, that’s their poo (frass). My VB also has some sawfly larvae — I cut off the leaves whenever I see caterpillars on them, damage seems to be minimal. But then again I only have a few plants…
A question or two about Roald Dahl please! @celcius_kkw and @Rojas I know you both have it, but all contributions welcome!Â
How heat tolerant is it - has it crisped badly for you in this year’s heatwaves?
How well would it do in shade?Â
I have ordered one from TCL in lieu of Crown Princess Margareta, which seems to be oos everywhere. I have also spotted that Lens do a standard RD and that’s really tempting me, but could be a pricey mistake if it hates the heat! The standard could go in mostly shade though or be planted in a pot and moved out of summer sun if necessary.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie I have Roald Dahl and it does well in shade. Lots of flowers, but not as profusely as @celcius_kkw's. Here is a photo taken a few seconds ago; there is a bit of pigmentation due to the rain and lower temperature.

Hi  @Nollie, mine is in a large pot in full sun all day, and only the outer petals crisped during the UK heatwaves. It flowered in waves, not continuously, resting during the particularly hot periods (max 30 to 35C for a few days, and 39C for one day). We had zero rain until this week where we are, but I did water deeply once a week with seaweed extract throughout the summer. There’s no scent at all but I love the varying colours and flower form.
Here’s a photo I took in mid July, on a day that was max 38C
It probably helps that it’s in a white plastic Elho pot nestled within a light grey pot (circled in blue below).

My Oranges and Lemons bed isn’t looking too bad (from a certain angle!) for this time of year, Golden Beauty at the front:
But Lady Emma Hamilton looking a bit sparse after her late chop back and Golden Celebration has gone all octopussy again:
So pleased to see this.

Darcey Bussel has done well for me this year in spite of the blackspot and sawfly attacks.

Going to be a challenge trying to get these back to the pergola intact.
