    ooh the diascia and heliotrope look exciting thank you. Yes my baskets are in the sun so that is why the impatiens does poorly. But don't be taking heliotrope to Australia where it is a pernicious weed

    @GardenerSuze One of the places I am currently growing it is pretty much all sand with a bit of old compost on the top, (full sun) and it's doing really well. I thought it might conk, but not at all. Here pictured towards the back. Pretty much as poor soil as you could wish to have.

    @Fire Thank you I can see immediately from all the other lovely plants what it needs thanks will be moving mine.
    I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

    I also grow Rozanne in my own gardens in part shade and on clay and it seems perfectly happy there too.

    @berarde Don't know a lot about Heliotrope but like other plants there are weeds and garden worthy plants. Heliotrope is supposed to smell fainty of cherry pie. I would look for one of the darker forms.

    Heliotrope does smell very strongly of cherry pie,in fact that's it's "common name". I've grown Dianthus for a few years in hanging baskets. I bought cheap plug plants, but they are too overgrown now. I'm removing them and planting in the ground.
