Euonymus cats and Toxic neighbour

I have just planted a beautiful Euonymus. My neighbour has 4 cats and paranoid and anxious about toxic plants. She moaning about my shrub now. I am a cat lover and I have a 13 year old cat lives with my mum.

Cats are intuitive and intelligent; they know of dangerous plants but she is going on about one of her cats who tests everything and she’s worried.  Is there a plant that’s similar to mine that is also non toxic that I can claim mine is ? Because her behaviour is quite extreme - she also complaining about my daffodils and my tulips - I have given away the tulips which were in a pot to my sister. I think she will try and kill my plants !

Please help.

@fareenaism, you can plant mostly what you want to in your own garden and your neighbour has no right to complain about your plants. If she is paranoid about her cats, then she must keep them indoors. It would be rather unusual for any cat to die through eating toxic plants, I personally don't know of any.

thank you - I liked my neighbour she helped me around the house - and he liked mice and spiders and she helped me catch a mouse and release it.  It’s shame ... she a paranoid now to her  I’m just like everyone else.. and I am not. I am Me.

Here's a link to Cats Protection's page on cats and plants. There's a downloadable list "cats and outdoor plants".  It does mention daffodils, but they are common as muck and so are cats, so I don't think they can be a huge problem. Other people's cats wander in my garden and I have lots of the plants on the list, and as far as I know the cats don't eat them. Ours is an indoor cat, we grow pots of grass for him to munch on so he doesn't go for the houseplants. If the plants are in your garden, it's your neighbour's responsibility to keep the cats from going in there if she's worried. Your neighbour can cut off anything that crosses over the boundary.

    I think you're saying what I think @Biglad. ;)

It's none of her bleeping business what you plant in your garden @fareenaism, so plant what you want  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

There are many Euonymus in many gardens locally including mine. They are extremely popular shrubs, and with good reason.
There are also quite a few cats that have been around here for a long time (too long in my opinion :))
Euonymus contain alkaloids (amongst other toxins) that are poisonous, but they also taste really, really, really bitter so animals generally know to avoid such plants.

And as said above, it's up to you what you plant in your garden.

Tell your neighbour that my neighbour is a vet of many, many years’ experience. She has never once come across a cat who has been poisoned by plants with a couple of rare exceptions of cats who have licked lily pollen which had been brushed onto their fur.

I believe in being polite and friendly to neighbours no matter what the provocation. There is nothing to worry about - cats don't poison themselves - and it is your garden, anyway. Everyone knows that you cannot stop cats wandering across gardens unless you imprison them in the house but if YOU are prepared to tolerate the cats, SHE should accept that you can plant what you want to.

    Well said Posy
Have had cats, dogs all my life. Always planted whatever I wanted. I keep chocolate out of the dogs way,but there are so many toxic things, you could go mad.
