Re your Clematis montana... as to how garden worthy they are, depends on how much space you have, and whether you want to allow them that space really.. it does grow quite rampant as you can see.. but they are generally very popular and a fabulous sight in mid to late May when in full flush. Only prune them immediately after they have flowered, which is usually sometime around mid June.. you can then cut back as much as you want to keep it manageable for your purposes, but you must leave all new growth it makes after this, to flower the following Spring. I should add, they can throw a strop and sulk for a bit if pruned too hard, flowering will be reduced the following Spring until it recovers fully..
Your clematis should flower something like this.. although it's on a trellis here, it's a more compact variety and kept in check. .. If yours is white, and scented of vanilla, I would guess yours is Clematis montana 'Elizabeth' as it's the usual one..
Please don't worry about your clematis for now. Hope it flowers well for you in May and you enjoy the scent. take care..
Thank you both so much! I'm really glad to have it identified as montana and to know what to do with it. The flowers were white, and I will check when they bloom this year if they are scented of vanilla.
Marlorena those pinky white ones are a beautiful sight, and they look really good covering that trellis in a compact way. You can hardly see the trellis behind them.
I am updating this thead with a picture of the flowers, in case anyone ever comes across it. Very lucky to get lots of lovely pale pink flowers. It didn't mind at all that I cut back all the extremely long vines back in March.
@Pink678 I'm delighted your clematis montana has flowered well for you after the cutback.. At a guess I would say it's one of these, but I'm not sure which. I think I just favour 'Mayleen' as I note some darker veining in the stripes..
It's a real pleasure to share the picture with fellow flower lovers. I just sniffed a flower and they have a strong vanilla smell.
Thank you for the links. I had a look at those pictures and I agree it could be either. I think I'm tending towards Elizabeth due to the shape of the petals, although I agree about the veining. They are very similar.

You can search this website - https://clematisontheweb.org/new-clemlistsearch.cfm - for time of flowering, colour of tepals, colour of stamens and more to try and identify it
