Capturing rainwater from the roof

I'm wondering if anyone has installed something similar to these water butts? Were they easy to install? Are you pleased you installed them or do you regret you ever bothered? Do you know of a better system? Our house is 6 months old, and no doubt built to the latest building spec which means the drain pipes go straight…

I've simply used the 'shoe' one attaches to the foot of a downpipe to steer water into a drain but, instead of using it at ground level as per normal, I cut my downpipe just above the top of the barrel and used the shoe there to fill the barrel.
