Capturing rainwater from the roof

I'm wondering if anyone has installed something similar to these water butts? Were they easy to install? Are you pleased you installed them or do you regret you ever bothered? Do you know of a better system?

Our house is 6 months old, and no doubt built to the latest building spec which means the drain pipes go straight underground, into a drain, we don't have an open drain cover.

The kit includes 2 butts of 100L each and fittings to attach to the drain pipe.

Don't buy from there, far too expensive. The same kit is available from https://getcomposting.com/en-gb/water-butts/ for £47.

If you have the space go for the Cloudbuster 200 litre version, single or double but both options better value.

  • I have the same..got mine from BnQ. Works fine.

Just be careful to fit the Diverter at the correct height in the down spout. Too high and the water carries on trying to get into the butt instead of stopping. Too low and it does not fill the butt.

Yes, we've got those and they work fine. As Palustris says, the correct height is crucial.

We bought 2 with diverter kit from our local water board, much cheaper option
  • If you have space, it's good idea to get as much water storage as you can. We have about 2800 litres and still run out in the summer!

Jenny_Aster  If they don't offend you, smile sweetly at a local dairy farmer who may have redundant blue 200 litre barrels that are easily linked at their tops so that they all fill in turn, but each has a tap at the bottom to take the precious water.  I bought five @ a fiver each.  Much cheaper.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm registered with GetComposting too, that's quite a saving.

Thanks Nick, sadly I don't have a local farmer to sweetly smile at, but you've sent me on an ebay trip, there're plenty on there although they are 'the buyer collects'

Just another question, the connector that fits on the drainpipe, does it come in two sections like a clamp? There's no way I can slide the connecter into place from either above or below.

Thank you for everyone's suggestions. Totally, totally helpful.  :)

You might need to cut the pipe, and separate it that way, of there are brackets supporting it to the wall,  loosen them a bit to allow you to move the pipe.

Thanks @Allotment Boy will need to investigate. I'll get more of an idea when I can hold the bracket.
