Purplerallim, was there any trees or shrubs shading your conservatory? Did you have any blinds?

Hi Nanny Beech, our conservatory is shaded by the house but only for a few hours in the early morning. It gets direct sun most of the day.

What temperatures do you guys get in the summer in your conservatories? I know the likes of Alan Titchmarsh, say if it's too hot for you,it's too hot for a plant. We have a single back door one end,2 french doors opposite, 2 opening windows each side of them. Wished we had had opening windows each end as well, but we're assured the white opaque glass would prevent glare and reduce the temperature,it doesn't. Wonder if the construction makes a difference. Ours has a dwarf brick wall. I bet you're all going to say you don't have blinds either!

We don't have blinds but seeing yours described I have to say that ours isn't all glass, we have one wall connected to ours neighbours extension so only two glass sides. I don't know if this sucks up any extra heat. Ours is always open to the house in the summer and we have a very cool house, so some heat is dissipated that way.

Perhaps thats it then.ours is dwarf brick wall, then glass,it's big,21x 11 feet, high lantern roof. When we had the lean to plastic roof it was even hotter. Our bungalow is very warm, lounge (which is open to kitchen then door to conservatory) faces south.we have cavity wall insulation, and all the doors/windows have been replaced with double or triple A rated glazing.so compared to you we have a massive glass oven. Because it's detached,a bungalow, completely unoverlooked,in the summer there is sun from sunrise to sunset in there, although the back garden faces north. Sun rises in the right, full on all day through the roof, then over to the west. was 25c yesterday, had the door open.

@Gardenqueen Brugmansia is as stunning plant but not sure I would personally want to sit next to one in a conservatory!
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

We have one brugmansia left quite a few years old, overwinters in a frost free green house. We had one a few years back had a 100 flowers out at one point, but with all the methods we now employ the only thing that stays in our conservatory in summer,is chillie pepper! We have a large sparmania Africana even that isn't happy in here in summer. Where do you live, that probably has a bearing as well. Last Friday we were on Eastbourne Beach in t shirts.

How you measure the temperature makes a huge difference. A thermometer sitting on a surface in full sun will give a spot temperature of that surface, much higher than the actual air temperature. You need your thermometer to be hanging in shade to give the actual air temperature.

Balgay. no-on has mentioned temps on here, although I have asked. I have a digital in/out thermometer for plants, its in shade in both aspects.Even today it's 17.7c in my conservatory.(8.7c outside) no heating on. Comfortable for me and the plants!!! I have tested it with my "cooking" thermometer it is pretty accurate. Mine is north facing the sun is too low at the moment to get above the bungalow.

My conservatory is west facing.  Cool in the morning, v.hot in the afternoon and no heating in the winter.  I have lots of plants in there and they seem to do fine.  Lots of misting in the summer.  During the growing season they are watered every couple of days with a few drops of plant food in the water.  I keep them fairly dry in the winter.  The door are mainly open in the summer when the weather is nice
