I was thinking the exact same thing at 2am this morning.
Dangerous to sleep with a walrus by the looks of it. Just because some people choose to waste their money doesn't mean that others are not suffering real poverty.
I heard very few fireworks compared to past years just a few at midnight. It always amazes me that some people still buy fireworks when they are struggling with money. A friend told me that she thinks some people have used the money for help with fuel bills to buy lots of Christmas presents too.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
I didn't hear a single firework last night. I went to bed at 10pm and didn't stir until gone 8am. My wife said she was worried the fireworks would wake the kids but they weren't too bothered. The dog was terrified as usual though.
I'm stuck at home today and everyone has gone out to have fun. There's not even any birds in the garden to watch. It's all just grey and boring outside and I can't face cleaning out the dead plants in the greenhouse just yet. I thought more would survive the cold snap but the internal rot is starting to show on the ones that looked borderline now. I need something cheerful to do but it's all boring jobs on the list. I'm trying to work up the motivation to buy bird food but I used to pay £1 a kilo for sunflower hearts and now it's £1.80-£2.50 a kilo at best. The finches turn up every day to check if I've splashed out yet.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
