15 minutes for mange tout is a very, very long time...
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I can't say lettuce has any taste but I still eat it-the crunchy Romaine hearts.

It matters not to me. When lettuce is put in the big dish with tomato, ordinary  onions,  spring onions, one pickled onion some sweet pepper, (did I mention onions) few tea spoons of sweet pickle and a full 300g pot of cottage cheese it taste great, and it is healthy enough. That provides two meals for me.

It didn't fall apart. When I boil vegatables I also save the water and drink it. Not water from boiled potatoes though.

No - they wouldn't fall apart, but all the nutrients would have been wasted, and they would have no taste left. I suppose if you're drinking the water you'd get the nutrients though....
I would have used the water for adding to soup.  :)

Love mange touts, especially lightly cooked with a knob of butter. Talking of trying new vegetables (or at least new ways of cooking them), I made cauliflower rice for the first time this week. Grated and then sauteed lightly.

I found it a really good rice substitute with my chicken stew. The only downside is it stinks the house out (both when I'm cooking it and digesting it)...

Best not to mention trying new vegatables-the pedants will be posting that you have had a sheltered life. 😂

Edit: Do you live in the Loxley in Sheffield area?
  • The flavour of any food will depend on your taste buds as well as the method of cooking.  I like Mange tout either raw when picked small enough or just very lightly steamed.  Same with French beans.  I also like carrots and beetroot raw but only those I grow myself as I can pick at the optimum time.  Can't grow Cauliflower due to space restrictions but enjoy that raw too.
I don't actually boil any veg ( other than beetroot for either preserving or to mix with plain yogurt ) but just steam them or when I include them with a stew or similar where they can cook in the liquid. That's just my preferred method tho.
Nowt wrong in trying new veg or new varieties of existing ones. I certainly haven't led a sheltered life but I do know what I like to eat :D

  • Tried frying the pods yesterday and a vast difference in taste as expected. Just like chips taste much different to boiled spuds.
  • That was worth your 19 pence then - glad you enjoyed them :)

Have you got somewhere you can grow them @young codger?
I used to grow in among other planting when the girls were little, but the more recent ones have been in pots. One large pot with 3 plants in it gives a good harvest.

I'm assuming the seed is still viable, so if you want some, I can send you a wee amount in an envelope. Just PM me your address if you fancy giving them a go.  :)
