Most online places seem to suggest it gets to 1.5x1.5m which is easily manageable but I did read 3x3m in 20 years which I think is perhaps more realistic due to shops always seemingly understating the size of plants.
I double check everything on the rhs website now, got bitten a couple of times with trees where the seller website says 4x4 but rhs says 8x8!!

    RHS says 2.5 - 4 over 5 to 10 years.

I’m gonna play it safe and get one and put it in a big pot.

I was looking at these in T*sco for £15 and was very tempted.  They're  so pretty.
Then I thought, wouldn't they be rather dull for  about 50 weeks of the year?
    Jury's out, for now.
I think the foliage is quite pretty too!

I had the same thought. Then I kept going back to it.

They were £15 in the GC I was in yesterday too. About 80cm tall (from top of pot).

    That’s a really good price!

To be honest, for that price I would have struggled onto the bus with one, but.......just not sure it would pay for it's keep, year round.  Even with nice blue-y foliage.

What's 80cm?  I'm still in pounds and ounces, here.....the ones T*sco had were about 5' tall, give or take 6".
Just under 3 feet so Tesco win on size.

I’m gonna go for it. It’s my birthday soon so it can be my present to myself.

Let us know how it goes, @TheGreenMan.  Love to see pics of it in situ.  Happy Birthday, when it comes!
    I'm still dithering!
    I’ll take some pics.

    Thank you. 👍🏼

  • The older I get the more I seem to appreciate a bit of a winter show, so a few weeks a year when it's otherwise gloomy doesn't seem such a bad exchange for just a green backdrop all summer.

I bought the Tesco one the other day and got home on the bus with it just fine. Mine is about 4'5 tall in a 3l pot. I only went to shop for food, but saw this and had to buy it. Bought a stick-thing from J.Parkers a couple of years back that never did anything for me, so this is the first time I've seen this variety.

As it's a standard, I'm not sure where to place it in the overcrowded small garden I have. I know it'll do far better in the ground than in a pot, but I'm torn whether to do just that. Up thread, someone said the roots wouldn't be spread to close to the house. My flower bed is only 4' away from a wall. Will this be not such a good idea to plant it in the ground after all? Are the roots of salix reach deep down and spread out fast?

    Thanks in advance.

I got one. From a local GC. I’ve just potted it into a bigger pot and put it near the front door where I can watch it….very closely. I now imagine that its roots will shoot out of the pot in search of my foundations and drains! 😂

But seriously, I’ll see how it copes in a pot in the south facing spot. I may put it in the back garden at some point….

Glad I bought it. I find the catkins very pleasing.
