Salix Mount Aso

TheGreenManTheGreenMan Posts: 1,957
Hi,

Has anybody got a Salix Mount Aso growing away in their garden?

I saw them in the garden centre today and the red catkins beguiled me.

I’ve heard awful things about willow roots and wondered if this one would be troublesome in the ground…or if it could be grown in a pot.

Anyone got any experience of growing one?

I like the look of that one The Green Man. I'm very suspicious of willows and their roots in gardens as you might have read on these pages  :#

This one doesn't grow to be a large one and something just occurred to me. If, say, one were planted away from the house and drains and if they were root pruned every year, would that solve any problem they might present?

I had one in my previous garden and have bought another for this garden as I love it so much. It didn't cause any issues at the old place but it was only planted in 2019!

    Thanks @Uff and @zugenie

Is root pruning exactly what it sounds like? I don’t think I want to chop its roots every year. Hmmmmm…..

I was thinking of it for the new bed I dug where I’m planting the Rowan but perhaps they’d compete with each other.

    It’s about 15m from the house….but only about 8 from a drain…

    Maybe not worth the risk.

    How tall was yours @zugenie
  • At 8m distance I think you would be fine. ‘Mt Aso’ is a large shrub, not a tree, so it doesn’t have the same kind of problems that a tree form would have in this respect.

I bought two of these about 3 years ago. They were small so I potted them on.
They are now nice sized shrubs, and looking fantastic with their red catkins.
Lovely source of pollen for our bees image

They'll be going into a dampish border in full sun this coming season. This is about 25m from the house and any drains so I'm not at all worried. I want to take a few cuttings to see if I can get a third one going as I think they'll look great as a group.

I think it was about 1-1.5m when we left (would be about 3 years in the ground)

See if you can spot it amongst the chaos!

Thank you @TheGreenMan I like when everything looks a little wild!

I hadn’t planned on buying mount aso again but then the plant man had a nice looking one for only £5, how could I refuse!

I think I would’ve bought it yesterday had it been a fiver.

I might take the plunge next week and see how we get on.
  • Most online places seem to suggest it gets to 1.5x1.5m which is easily manageable but I did read 3x3m in 20 years which I think is perhaps more realistic due to shops always seemingly understating the size of plants.
