Does anyone know what this is?

When my neighbours put a new fence up quite a bit of my gardens foliage was cleared and it’s exposed this pipe, that I was unaware of before, does anyone know what it is and what it might be connected to?
I want to run a swa armoured power cable to my garage and this is in the way… so before I start digging the trench I ought to find out what it is.
My location is the outskirts of Bristol,  higher up than the city centre by some way, and I think my house dates back roughly to the 1910s.

Can you lift off the metal top bit and shine a torch down the hole ?
    Intriguing 🤔

It looks to me like an old style vent pipe for a septic tank drainage system or similar.

I was thinking the same - for off-gassing.

    Bomb shelter vent?
  • It’s the sort of thing @raisingirl may know about.

The metal bit won’t come off, I did stick my phone in to take a photo with the flash on, none the clearer as to what it is, but it does look like a spider might be a resident…

Do any of your neighbours have something similar in their gardens ? It does look like some kind of vent. There's not an Anderson shelter buried in your garden by any chance ?

It's a sewer vent I think. Every front garden in my street has one.
