Is that yours Raisingirl? Was it already there?  We looked at all sources aspects,am interested. They are hugely expensive. Are they used for the cooking as well? I have electric cooker, some electric fires.which is why we are going to have solar energy installation.
No, ours is about the size of a standard fridge-freezer, for a large detached 4 bed house. We put it in. The one we put in the other house was air source, it's about 2'6" square, a foot wide and stands in the back garden, close to the house wall. The only thing indoors is a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard that it's connected to. That was for a medium sized 2 bed house. That cost just less than £5k all installed and working. Ours here cost about £10k, half of which was the cost of the borehole, which took a week to drill. For most people, an air source heat pump will be much more reasonable cost.

The shoebox one is the sort we'd use in a block of flats

The costs you'll be quoted by one of the installation companies are high, which reflects the scarcity of people doing it at the moment. A competent plumber can put them in though, there's nothing difficult.

They do the space heating and hot water. Cooking is a separate thing - I'd suggest induction hobs and an electric oven, given the choice

Thanks Uff, sounds gorgeous, can I have a picture. My late parents had a cottage in Cornwall, about 10 miles from Penzance, right on the cliffs,2foot thick stone walls, tiny windows, dark, cold, but now at my age, would probably think incredibly cute. In my 20s I didn't!

My haven't things changed since the Jan when this thread was started. I thought I paid a lot for heating oil the last time I filled up but just ordered a top up and it's going to cost me 92.4 ltr plus vat. I expect they will put about 800 ltrs in. I feel sorry for myself but I feel sorry for others who are struggling to make ends meet much more.

We are having ours topped us this week. It had been £1.39/litre but now 99p/litre excluding VAT.

I ordered 500 litres yesterday. £0.91066/ltr all in. Average in England is currently 99p so I must be in one of the better served areas.

I know one thing for sure, I'm glad I didn't follow the dream and move to one of the Scottish Islands.

You could have got your own wind turbine. Is it ever not windy up there?
