Everyday Japanese Gardens

  • These are fascinating. We've all seen the usual 'professional' gardens, so it's great to get an insight into what ordinary Japanese people are doing with their spaces.

    Cheers @plantbloke

I’m starting to see a pattern of the same trees around where I live. I wonder if that is general of Japan or just where I am. When I can get a bit further afield, I will have a look.

It seems cloud pruning is hugely popular! Do you have any photos of the small courtyard gardens popular in Japan? Tsuboniwa I think they're called.

I feel like there's a coffee table book to be made out of your photos!

Unfortunately, I don’t have any tsuboniwa photos. I think they are more typical if the Machiya townhouses further in to the city of Kyoto. Also, as I think they tend to be inside, it’s harder to get shots of them. It would be nice though. I’ll see what I can do.

    Nice idea re the book!

    Hello Everyone,

I mentioned before that they sell trees in garden centres near to where I live. I happened to be in one today so I took a few snaps. Hope they are of interest.

I think this first one is the same as one or two in my own garden. It seems to be a Kurogane Holly. This one seems very reasonable to me, for its size, at ¥44,000 (£290). Saying that, I would not really know.

This next one says, ‘Red Maki’ or red pine. Much more costly at ¥275,000 (£1800). I wonder how much these would be in the UK?

These ones in sacks are not normally there. It must be a special promotion for the time of the year.

Sorry, cut the top off it in the previous post.

    Some sort of Juniper.

It says, ‘Black Pine’ and it is the most expensive yet at ¥605,000. It is smaller then the red pine but costs a lot more. The first few photos were of the seasonal promotion but this is a semi-permanent fixture of the shop (until someone buys it). Perhaps that is why.
