I have a scribbled note beside each phone that is supposed to tell me which buttons to press, and when, in order to have a conversation with some innocent soul

    (I don’t “do” technology.) 🥴

Think this is a scam. Keep getting Emails which say that I am about to delete all our contacts. I ain't. I have a feeling that Backing them up via the scam would let them access my contact list.

    I suspect so too.

My answer to cold callers varies, if I am in a good mood I let them ramble a bit before I cut them off. In a bad mood or the third one of the day I get very unladylike telling them where to shove it.  The one who asked me if I had thought about a funeral plan when my husband was seriously ill in hospital , I really let rip.

I am on the telephone preference service too. It has no effect whatsoever, the scammers from India don't check.  In the last week they have requested to see my loft to see if the insulation is up to spec, offered to replace my TV if it fails on their wonderful scheme, and offered an extended warranty for my washing machine.

Hi Palustris, many years ago, I had a similar kind of email, purporting to be from Yahoo.  I can't remember its exact wording but I do remember that I didn't trust it, so I spent the best part of an entire day, trying to find someone fom Yahoo to talk to.  Eventually I succeeded and spoke to an American sounding woman who told me, "We don't send such emails," and ended the conversation!

I have a feeling your suspicion is right but if you can get hold of anyone from your email service provider, you can ask them your question and get the correct answer.

    Good luck!

    Lucky you!  ;)

    Hi Palustris

I agree with both, Fidgetbones and Danae; it seems suspicious.

Take a look here; it might help you.

Thank you, Helen; that's very useful.

I already knew about texts but not emails!

Old scams are doing the rounds again.  Irritating and dangerous even to those of us who are fully aware of the fact that scammers are relentless.

Today, I was explaining to my BIL that I fear, as Christmas is getting closer and delivery emails proliferate, I will forget my usual precautions and click on their links.

He, who is very techy, thought the best way of avoiding them is to set up a domain of your own.  You may choose to call it anything you like, including your real name or not: alexbig.co.uk (!) and when you order things online, say from Harrods (!!) you would set up an email address: [email protected]

Apparently, as this method does not disclose your main email address, it would be less likely to be compromised.

My sister says only a techy would think that way...

However, I think we all have to try and keep the wretched.. beggars out of our bank accounts.

I'm much too much of a luddite, Zoe, to try this but I can see how it would help.  I think...

I'm a bear of little brain, so I think I'll get my grandson to do it.  OH doesn't believe in online shopping.  He insists we should keep it local.

    Right.
