I've got an ornamental grape vine which turns a brilliant red in autumn. It grows 10ft+ over a season but I cut it back to the main stem during the winter so it doesn't get out of hand. The fruit is small but edible, the blackbirds love them. My neighbours have a grape vine too, not sure what type but I don't think it's ever pruned and it's growing up their Leylandi, and winning!

The roots are probably 25ft from our fence.

  • That's very pretty but sounds enormous! We don't really have anything for that at the moment.

Virtually any Acer will need some protection from wind, regardless of type, if you want good colour, because without that protection, the foliage is compromised.  :)
Certainly Japanese Maples but Field Maples wouldn't need protection (or Sycamore, Norway Maple...).

You also get pink tinged seeds with Field Maples while the leaves are still green.

Yes, that's why I was wondering about Evenley Red which is a field maple. Can't find much about it though.

I didn't think the OP wanted huge trees as such though. Apologies if that's wrong.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I've got one space left I could start a tree that will get big, if there was something right for the spot.

If you have the room, maples are lovely, but it takes a while for them to get sizeable, then they can need a bit of maintenance.
You'll need to bear in mind the surrounding area too - under planting can be awkward due to the shade and the lack of moisture, but it can be done if you're careful about choices and it's wet enough to keep the soil viable for establishment.  :)

This Acer is pink in early spring as it unfurles acid green in summer and this in autumn.  Pic taken yesterday,  it was much fuller up to a few days ago but it is dropping leaves rapidly now.
Of course there are many Acers that are red all year.

    AB Still learning

  • @Marlorena does you Ribes Odoratum live in full sun or shade? I've seen conflicting advice online but whatever you're doing is obviously producing fab colour.

Thanks. I think the Japanese ones are unlikely to like my garden, but a field maple might be tough enough.
