red autumn colour

I've decided my garden is lacking vibrant red autumn colour. We've got space for shrubs, maybe a tree or climbers up a 6 ft post.

We're windy and it gets down to about -10.

Anyone have any exciting suggestions?

  • What's the soil like?  Acid, neutral or alkali?  Loamy, clay, or freedraining gritty sand?

And what else have you got in that part of the garden?

My first thought is Euonymus 'Red Cascade' ... an improved version of our native Spindle tree ... but it dislikes chalky soil.  I can't grow it here.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Euonymus Alatus, and the smaller Euonymus Alatus 'Compactus'.
    Sunny Dundee
  • It's clay soil, but quite nice for the first foot. On a slope so not too boggy.

Plenty of options for sunny or shady. Dominant plants are fruit trees, but we've got some wisteria and clematis starting, roses, various soft fruit bushes and some perennial edibles we're trying too.

Euonymous looks promising. Anything taller or climbing?

I know I'm always banging on about Cornus Alba Baton Rouge but it has spectacular red leaves in Autumn and bright red stems throughout the winter. Mine are growing in clay soil.
  • That's also quite nice, thanks
  • Ooh. That Ribes Odoratum looks very interesting. Thanks

Rowans - loads to choose from.
Some spireas look great at this time of year - the white ones have great autumn colour.

If you can eventually get some protection from wind [shrubs and other trees are best]  lots of Acers will do the job.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Cotinus give a great show of red leaves in Autumn - we have Cotinus ‘Grace’ that never disappoints
  • How about a malus tree with bright red crab-apples? I have the variety 'Gorgeous' and it really is!
