Unknown bulbs

Im looking to identify some bulbs. Inherited a lovely garden, but lots of bulbs everywhere.  Those we know we have replanted, those we didnt we planted in pots last autumn, hoping they would flower.  These bulbs were planted in a pot as we were not sure what they were. They were a lot smaller then.
The leaves appeared around a month later than our narcissi. and looked slightly different. No flowers appeared and the leaves only died down in August.  Dug them up today intending to move them, to find they had grown, had good root sustems and had started to sprout.  Still none the wiser what they are and wondering if anyone can help identify them.

They look like tulips to me.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • The leaves were not tulip leaves. looked similar to daffs, but slightly different colour and not so long.  Stronger too as they didnt flop about the same.

They look like a narcissus of some sort to me but a small variety because the bulbs look small compared to say King Alfred for example.
SW SCOTLAND but born in Derbyshire
  • Considering the huge variety of Narcissus available these days, I'd suggest you put them back in pots ( or in the garden and mark where you planted ) and see what happens in a few months.
Once you have leaves showing, post a photo and see if an ID is possible.  Even better if they flower next year altho specific variety ID's of these bulbs aren't always that easy.
Bulbs do need to reach an optimum size to flower and there is always the chance that digging them up also set them back somewhat.
  • They were much later coming up.  Beginning of April before they appeared, by which time most of my narcissus were in bloom

They don't all flower at the same time though  :)
Immature bulbs won't flower either, as @philippasmith2 says.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Autumn crocus just about to flower?
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • The leaves died down during September, and had disappeared.  Think I am going to have to wait another 7-8 months to find out what they are.
