Going back to the original problem, wouldn't it be an idea at least to try the noise cancelling headphones? Good ones can be had for a couple of hundred and you can take them with you if you decide to move. I really find a fountain very good for noise distraction as well and that needn't cost too much. Buy one with a lot of water tinkling in it and it will make a difference. If those work then you could stay and think of spending more to make your space private and quieter. Unfortunately the world is now noisier than when us oldies were younger. We were told to be quiet if we were noisy. You only need to listen to music in cars now, so loud that they expect to be able to play music outside in the same way. I hate the way that magazines like Gardeners World run adverts that encourage outside living involving parties that are bound to disturb neighbours. It's such a noisy world and it isn't fair on those of us who just want to sit outside and listen to the birds.
Lancashire Lass I could not agree more with you - at 42 I don't think if I'm an oldie or a youngun but I would never feel totally at ease with having a big, noisy party in my garden - or at least if I did it wouldn't be on a regular basis and I would let my neighbours know in advance. This summer I had two days on each side of hiring giant inflatable slides or bouncy castles with endless kids and screaming and music. Again, I completely realise they are doing nothing officially wrong and just enjoying their space, it's just a shame it means others who are in a different place in life (ie. on their own and enjoy listening to birds and having some peaceful time outside) have to suffer.
Having spent the entire day glued to Right Move and getting nowhere, I think it can't hurt to at least invest in some noise cancelling ear phones as they will have many uses. Can you recommend any to me Lancashire Lass?
I have noise cancelling headphones for use when someone nearby is entertaining outside in the summer but it means I forgo the sound of bird song, wind in the trees, buzzing bees and other sounds of nature - the whole point of being in my garden! On these occasions I go walking to enjoy peace and quiet elsewhere. I don't like the sound of a fountain either if it's man made - they rarely mimic nature. I heartily agree with you @Lancashire Lass about those garden designs incorporating outdoor cinemas, fire pits and the like - ghastly!
The neigbours behind must have had a bouncy castle in their garden a couple of weeks ago for presumably one of their kid's birthday party so presumably some loud music. So as we didn't have any windows open, we heard nothing so it didn't bother me.
I only noticed it the following day as it was being deflated.
