Streptocarpus splitting

Hi, can anyone tell me when you're meant to split the streptocarpus plant, & if you're only meant to split it once? Thanks

I haven't grown Streptocarpus for years but i do remember taking leaf cuttings for new plants. Take a medium size leaf and cut it straight across in sections putting the bottom of each section upright in a pot of compost, they will soon root and produce new plants.
Others may have other ideas. Good Luck!

Hello Sue. It all depends on how big and congested the plants are in the plant pot. Once you have taken the plant out of the pot look for complete 'rosettes' and gently tug them apart and pot on into individual pots. Floralies is spot on with her advice about taking leaf cuttings to grow new plants. That is how I propagate plants to give to friends.

Hi, thanks for the advice, can I just clarify when you say cut a leaf off straight & put in compost upright, do you mean put the stalk of the leaf in the compost? Thanks

    That's brilliant, thank you 😊

  • Just make sure you don't plant any upside down, if you cut the leaves into horizontal strips, like in the bottom example. ;)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Oh I think I'm getting a bit confused now, so if I cut a stalk/leaf off & hold the stalk, cut the leaf horizontally & plant the stalk into the compost leaving the horizontally cut leaf on show?

Hi Sue. Imagine that you have a leaf and you cut it into slices like so:

When you put the cut ends into the compost make sure you always have the lower cut edge of each section inserted into the compost and not the other way around i.e. upside down and yes, you leave the upper cut end exposed as in the earlier picture I posted for you.

Got it now & thanks for the photo I needed that, I look forward to getting some results 😀
