The midge is a different thing altogether. They like to hunt in packs, silently........tiny little things capable of inflicting terrible torment. On midgey evenings I tolerate it for as long as I can then have to go indoors. Fortunately those occasions are rare here.
No biters here (almost) but I can't sleep with the window open. Even with it closed, I can tell when neighbours went to work or when the birds started.
My wife was odd (well odderererer than me in some aspects) - she could sleep through any commotion from the TV and would quite merrily sleep on the settee, but couldn't sleep with the window even slightly ajar in the bedroom, as she could hear the traffic noise and that stopped her sleeping. I now have the bedroom window on the 'latch' all year round - the only problem with that is the spiders' webs it encourages. Ssshhhhh, don't tell the kids I keep the window partially open or they'll jemmy it open.
We keep our bedroom window open all the time, except possibly on very cold frosty nights. En-suite window ditto, kitchen most of the daytime, living room etc as and when. I think the midges/gnats have now stopped biting me, I'm probably too old to be palatable. Used never to be able to sit outside in the evenings which is probably just as well as I seem to be allergic to most insect bites.
I think pretty much everyone gets bitten but only some have a reaction. One of the plusses about no longer having pets is no longer being bitten by their livestock.
Avon Skin so Soft is very odd because although it clearly works for some people and they swear by it, for many others it is completely ineffective. When Which? tested insect repellents some while ago, doing so with their usual objective rigour, Skin so Soft came 22nd out of 23. Last place probably went to shouting ‘Go away’.

Not at all. It's interesting. For years I assumed 'gnats' meant a specific thing. Now I think not, generally.
