Cleaning soil off potatoes

  • Thank you to everyone who responded.  I'll clean them under hot water & remove the spots with a knife.

    I do the same, scrape the blemished bits with a small knife.

  • I also think it looks like scab. 
    I have a very old fruit knife with a short blunt, elongated triangular blade set into a horn handle. I only ever use it to remove scab from my potatoes or to skin them although that is rarely as I eat the skins of new and salad potatoes. Scab is caused by planting potatoes in freshly manured ground and is not harmful as far as I know.
  • Agree with scab - soil will wash away .  If you have one of the old style potato peelers, just use the pointy end to remove the scabby bits - often easier than a knife.

    Sausage casserole for me and youngest @philippasmith2, with homemade tomato sauce. Roast veg in the oven as well, for my soup.
    I know how to live...

  • Stop it @Fairygirl - Beans on toast here( at least home made bread but...........) .  Been too busy in cellar for anything else ). Can't even say I've grown Mushrooms down there to pick ;)
