A second here from me for Polish Spirit clematis along with a climbing rose - I have it in its first year here in my garden against trellis and it is doing really well - long flowering season.  Gorgeous dahlias btw @sheldon.dyer
Gardening in East Suffolk on dry sandy soil.

Watch out - she'll be suggesting plastic grass next @sheldon.dyer  :D

If you cut the conifers back to the main trunk, but leave a good length of stump, you can use it as a lever to get the roots out.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

She tried that a couple of years ago and got short shrift for her efforts 🤣. Yes, my neighbour said that  about the trunks too. Good advice 👍

Thanks. The garden won second prize in our local competition this year. They’re looking a bit tired compared to their best a couple of weeks ago. I had more than 40 heads from each plant this year. All were a good size too. Not bad for a bulb that originally came from Lidl!

Good luck with it @sheldon.dyer. Beefing up the soil is definitely the way to go too, as @JennyJ describes. The soil will be poor, and whether you go for a rose or a clematis or both, it'll pay dividends to improve it for them.  :)

An evergreen is a lot to ask for.  How about a rambling rose?

    Or Clemantis Apple Blossom?

    Ah, someone's suggested both already.
  • Update: I decided on Lonicera Heckrottii ‘American Beauty’ as is is easier to control and flowers from May to September. The work is now completed as you can see from the photo.
