I'll leave someone else to determine the suitability of the jasmine @sheldon.dyer. It might be ok where you are  :)
@Dovefromabove and @Topbird are familiar with those areas  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Hi @sheldon.dyer - I was on a similar quest a couple of years ago and ended up with lonicera japonica Horwood Gem, a scented honeysuckle. It's fragrant, evergreen, very hardy (I'm in the north east), and grows fast. I have it over an arch, and it doesn't grow too bushy. Just be aware that the leaves are supposed to turn mottled as it gets older (in case you aren't a fan of variegated leaves). Mine doesn't show that much yet. I'm pleased with it anyway!

If you're reasonably happy about the privacy issue then, personally, I'd be more inclined to go with a rose and clematis combo. A deep purple small flowered viticella clematis like Polish Spirit would look quite nice with the Strawberry Hill rose. Polish Sprit has completely covered (but not overwhelmed) my 2m high obelisk. Would also look good with a yellow or soft apricot rose.

If you're really sold on the Star Jasmine (they are nice plants aren't they?) you can always give one a go - that type of trellis will provide quite a bit of shelter and the jasmine will twine nicely through the panels. You can always take it out if it doesn't work 🙂

Good luck with getting that conifer out - it's a bit of a monster!

Difficult to say tbh. The are has never been uncovered since I moved in and I suspect it is more ‘builders rubble’ than anything else. I’m going to dig it out and put some topsoil, compost and grit mix in before I plant anything.

😁 yes, really looking forward to digging them out 😩 there are four separate trees there so it should be fun!
  • Thanks to everyone for their comments, it’s really appreciated.
My wife, who is not a gardener, suggested a plastic leaf screen. I’ll leave you to guess how that conversation went 😁

Have a look for bagged well-rotted manure or soil conditioner at the garden centre or DIY shop to improve the soil where the conifers have been - it'll be very depleted.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
