Sorry @Fire, should have said that the troughs are quite small!  We have some hanging around the war memorial and on the church railings, along the railings in front of the castle and in front of the library.  We have some larger planters but they now have things like phormium in them so we only have the edges of those.

I've only just looked at this thread, and I grew the poppy Lauren's Grape this year.
If anyone wants seed - I'll have thousands of them if anyone wants them.

The flowers are fleeting, and I'm not sure how well they would do here normally, but they were lovely in the hot, sunny summer we had here this year.

  • It is stunning isn't it @Fairygirl? If you run out and more folk want seed I also have tons, as well as some mixed black/purple seed! I overdid it on the poppies this year but they did look stunning, and you get the utter delight of watching the huge petals tremor when a bumble bee is rolling around inside ❤️

I doubt they would be great her in an average summer @CharlotteF - too wet and windy, but I'll put some in the most sheltered spots again and see. I'm not sure if they'd be any good in a container, but I might do that as well. I have a couple of biggish ones that I normally have evergreens in.  :)

  • They'd certainly be fine soil - wise in a pot and they seem to stay upright. Worth a go!

It's more about getting a suitable site for them @CharlotteF. It's a bit windy here  ;)

  • Yes of course! 😂 I suppose if you had a pot 'display' they could go at the back with other plants to catch them. Pots are my weak spot- fastest way for me to kill stuff, so I'm not sure!

I tend to do 'single plant' pots and then group them. I don't like stuff mixed together.  ;)
It also allows for changing the picture according to the season.

Yes that's what I meant, sorry. I don't think they'd compete all that well with other stuff in a pot, but a big pot of them shoved behind some other pots of sturdier plants might work?

Oh yes, I see what you mean. They'd have to be in the centre of a group really, but I do so many other things in pots, so it'll just depend on whether I can be bothered  ;)
