  • How big will the lawn be,? Our garden faces north, but its big, unoverlooked or shaded by buildings,it's a bungalow. There is always some sun somewhere in the summer. In winter, under trees,we have given up attempts at grass, both turf and seed, always used specific shade grass. It's now a raised bed. How long and wide is the whole garden? Difficult to tell from Estate agent photos, they have magic cameras, the 11 by 11foot lounge in our last House looked absolutely huge

So the bottom area measures 7.8m x 5.3m so the lawn would be somewhere within that area

Plenty of room for a wee lawn  then  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Plan it so that the areas that catch the sun most is used for trees and flowers, because they grow and flower most and best in the sun.  For any area shaded at low height by a shed or a bungalow, you can grow a tree to a height in a pot in a different sunny spot, and then put into the ground in the low-level shade.  Trees sense the sun and they immediately focus on sending shoots up to catch the sun at the higher elevation.

Grass grows aggressively and spreads in the immediate surrounding areas by self seeding after they are established.  So, the lawn can manage in shaded parts.

I'm afraid there are hundred of plants - of all types - which will grow perfectly well without sun. That's very misleading @Jac19  :)

  • Some while back @pansyface recommended these tubs for fruit trees, shrubs etc. Not at all expensive and I think they’re quite acceptable in appearance for those of us who don’t want to spend a lot and who are happy to let the plants have all the attention

That's misleading.  While there may be a few shade dwellers, the best ones need sun; and even many of the low percentage who will manage okay in the shade will flourish and flower more in the sun than in the shade.

See for yourself, Jessica.  Go over to several online plant site.  Pick 100 plants you love in each.  Count how many of them "prefer full sun" and how many "prefer shade."

Try Chiltern, and Stocks & Green seed sites.

    Trolling me, again.

The proof is in the pudding.  Count and find out the truth for oneself.
Try the seed sites Chiltern and Stocks & Green, for example.
