Bulbs. Grit or no grit.

    Monty mixes grit with compost to sit his bulbs on. That is what I'm going to do with my new garden in SW France as it's heavy clay. In OH's garden in Norfolk it's quite sandy so I just planted them.
    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

    My garden has poor drainage and I don't put grit at the bottom of planting hole. I worry that the water will pool there and bulb will be sitting on top of pool.

    That's often the problem @newbie77. You just create a sump. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Thanks everyone for replying to my original query.  An interesting variety of answers.
    Overall, I'm not going to bother with grit in the hole anymore.
    But most of you mix it in with the compost/backfill, so that's what I'll be doing from now on.

  • I do plunk a lot of grit under and around them, but we do get ***rain*** here
