-4c this morning with a proper ground freeze and more to come. Just as I received notification of a bare root order on it’s way - most of which I’d hoped to get straight in the ground but will probably have to pot up and keep cosy instead.
Nothing in bloom here except a couple on Super Trouper and the odd shrivelling bud. Finally the remaining leaves are dropping of their own accord.

@cooldoc ..I had been meaning to get it for some time but kept missing out... I noted it was the last one they had as bare root, so there was no need to email them.. .. I don't know anyone else who sells it now in UK..
@Cambridgerose12, out of so many plants i have one The Poet's Wife in pot and a lady of shallot in ground, both have flowers. But I really cant say that it is variety or their location in terms of dry/wet and sun which is helping. My neighbour has Lady of shallott standard in a sunny spot and it has lots of flowers. Some other roses also get buds but to me looks like may be for these two plants the buds have more chances of opening before getting ruined.
@Cambridgerose12 I have a few flowers on Munstead Wood, Bonica and Lady of Shalott. The blooms are definitely much smaller than usual, due to the end of the season and frosts.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
@Cambridgerose12 ive got a few buds but my Hulthemia roses have open blooms, Angel Eyes has a lovely cluster. I just picked pheno geno 'Natalija' in bloom as well
@Fire and anybody else involved in community gardens. Just read in my RHS Jan mag, Page 9, Harkness Roses are giving away 5000 John Ystumllyn roses to community groups who can illustrate why inclusivity in gardening matters. John Ystumllyn was an 18th C Black gardener from Gwynedd. His rose is an apricot/yellow/cream one. Harkness are also offering 25 plants of any rose for community initiatives in exchange for a photo. Mutabilis Lady Hillingdon, shrub version Mme. de Sévigné Catherine Guillot Ducher
…plus an unexpected freebie, Gloire de Ducher. Now this is the tiniest, wimpiest specimen ever, with two 3mm canes. I wonder if they lifted it by mistake and bunged it it anyway? Would’ve been a cheek to charge for it if I had ordered it!
At the opposite end of the scale, Mutabilis is huge with the biggest, longest, fattest tap root I’ve ever seen. I lost my last specimen when I potted it up in a largish pot and left it outside over winter, so I was going to keep it in a pot in the garage until spring - but no pot I have is deep enough. Hmm, rush out and buy a deeper pot or risk it straight in the wintery ground and pile on protection? Decisions…
