  • I think both your gardens are looking really smart and tidy, wish I could say the same for mine. Despite a tidy-up it's still looking a bit entry-level shame gallery :/

I'm still a little shocked by what I've done, but this was the result of my job of the day: tie in the climbers.

I suddenly decided I'm done with stiff caned thorny climbers that throw out mad 10' limbs that are impossible to tie in. Once I hacked back the beautiful Golden Gate, a wonderful yellow with a wafty scent but a vengeful and unruly beast, Summer Wine (lhs) and Shropshire Star followed without preamble.

I'm quite sad about GG but it became too difficult to deal with the older it got. The summer before last I cut it back to rejuvenate and start it again but it came back equally difficult to control.  On the plus side it has opened up a 5 metre gap on the south facing fence :)

I haven't done any research yet for replacements (and might leave it til next winter) but I think I'll try and find climbers more like Summer Sweetheart, a bendy and manageable rose that even though it is established and a decent size doesn't get inch thick canes flailing about.  I also have Blush Noisette which I grow as a large shrub supported by the fence and it is wonderful and just sits there not causing hassle.

Mine isn't tidy @Victoria Sponge. It just looks alright from a distance due to all large evergreen shrubs.

I am waiting for schools to open and an important work milestone to finish then I will take  one or two days off to prune and clean. Hopefully I can finish my work milestone/deadline before school closes  due to Covid.

I’m finally able to do some gardening today 🙌 Going to plant a potted Mutabilis (ordered bare root but Beales sent me a nice potted one), and bare root Generous Gardener x 2 (freebies with an arch from Agrifranes - yet to be built 😬). I think I might move my Mme. Isaac Pereire to a spot with less sun as I think the blooms do better (more luscious), will be quite a task though as it’s in a difficult spot. Might replace it with one of the Generous Gardeners.

Well decided to leave the Mme Isaac Pereire as it was too much faff to move it, and plant the Generous Gardener to grow with it. Finally planted my spring bulbs, slightly late 😓
