STAGHORN SUMAC
morning everyone I have a large staghorn sumac which I love to see change and develop over the seasons, however this year it’s dropped yellow leaves virtually from the beginning of the season and I’m concerned something is happening to it can anyone help?

If it doesn't usually have yellow leaves through the season, they may be due to the very dry spring we had (before the wet May arrived). The soil a foot or so down became very dry and even the wet May didn't seem to penetrate down to deeper root level, at least not here in East Anglia. That tree has a huge amount of foliage to support ... it'll take a lot of water to do that and my guess is that once the canopy is established not a lot of rain reaches the roots.
I think that next year, starting towards the end of March, I'd give it a couple of hours of trickling hosepipe twice a week until mid April ... that should soak the ground down by the roots.
Hope that helps
Any chance of a photo when it's in full autumn colour?

Be interesting to know because they usually sucker like mad when main branches are pruned back to any extent.
