As an aside, for anyone happening to be reading this, my spare room IS currently available....

  • I too have ugly sheds and tall fences next door which block the small amount of sun my garden gets. Luckily I had an established mahonia which hides a fair part of the shed. It is as tough as old boots, looks exotic and has wonderful flowers any time from November to February. It does have spikey leaves but neither I nor my boisterous terrier find them a problem. The flowers have a sweet lily of the valley type scent which is a blessing in the cold weather. The only downside is their attraction to coal tits who can't get enough of the nectar and peck from the back. In the autumn there are sloe-like berries. Great plant for awkward corners and very low maintenance,

I'm growing a bamboo in a pot as a screen.  It takes a while to reach the height you want but you could put a pot where you need it then move it elsewhere when the other plants get to the desired size.
