Nanny Beach, In that case, sounds like I'll be having the false castor oil plant (fatsia) as well as the 'real' castor oil plant (ricinus) in the same garden. Who names these things eh . With the castor oil plants, I think I'm sorted as far as screening.
It's middle boarder plants that I'm stuck on at the moment.
Sarcococca hookeriana var digyna, or 'Purple Stem' would be evergreen and shade tolerant; it does have an Asian look to it if not exactly tropical. There are dwarf bamboos you could use, unfortunately a lot of them are insanely invasive, but you could sink a pot into the ground to contain them. For ground cover look at Ophiopogon jaburan or Luzula sylvatica 'Tauernpass' ( a broad leaved version of wood sedge). And Asarum europeum is evergreen in mild areas.

Thanks for the suggestions Loxley. Homework this evening is to research the plants you've listed.
Punkdoc, I'll try to fit at least 2 layers and see how it goes. May look better once the fatsia are more mature and pruned at the bottom. Its all one big experiment at the moment. I sometimes feel like I'm expecting too much from such a small space.
"shady exotic style boarder" made me think of some sultry latino type chap living in the spare room"
Just seen this! Glad I’m not the only one Nekky, I wouldn’t bother trying to change the title. These auto spelling correctors / predictive text things can provide quite a lot of amusement. I especially love the puns.
You can't change the title of a thread. You can edit your posts , within an hour of posting, but not thread titles. Re Fatsia, false castor oil plants etc - this is why it's important to have the correct names for plants. Saves a lot of confusion. That variegated one isn't very hardy so it'll depend where you live as to whether it survives. The green ones can get very large, so I'm not sure you'll get much to grow in front of them apart from some low growing plants, as already said. Some of the smaller grasses like Luzula might be ok. There wouldn't be room for a mid storey planting from looking at the space in the photos. You may need to broaden your ideas a bit and accept that you can't have all evergreen planting too.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
