Dicsonia Antarctica large off shoot propagation

I have a large independently rooted Dicsonia Antarctica Tree Fern off shoot. I have transplanted it in the ground. It seems like a large branch and doesn’t have a heart/ centre like a larger specimen. It is about two metres tall. Does it need pruning? Is it a waiting game for it to develop into a more recognisable / adult version. How do I treat it? It seems hardly already as have survived a couple of winters in the garden.

  • Can you add a photo to help out any tree fern growers to offer better advice?

  • I'd be interested to see a photo too as I haven't experienced an off shoot on D antarctica.
If it was an off shoot, and given the size mentioned, I'd have thought it should be showing a heart.
    Intriguing :)

  • I’ve removed the one at the front now which has its own root system.

I am so sorry but that tall thing is not Dicksonia antarctica.
It is something completely different...leaves are nothing like your tree fern.
I cannot see enough detail to id it.
Maybe it is a weed. Maybe a gift from the birds.
    i have turned/trimmed your pic.

see link for a baby tree fern.

  • Okay, strange. It has fern type leaves and some flat leaves too. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ll try and get a closer picture.

It would appear to have 2 imposters...leaves not clear but look different.
    One at the front.
Other maybe in top of the tree fern.
    Please add clear pics.

Yes, it looks like you've got at least three different plants in that pot.

    I'd agree - not a tree fern.
Something's seeded in from outside.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

  • I have a small one.. and the big one has a lot of flatter leaves and some fern type leaves. (Not sure why pictures are coming in non-vertical!)
