Winter veg

I’m pretty new to veg growing, 2021 is my 4th year. I sow in March but many of those crops will be done soon (potatoes, caulis, turnips) and I have nothing to put in those empty beds.
Is there anything I could sow now, or do the winter crops get sown in spring too?

Some salad crops might do well @ellenakirk, but it largely depends on what you like to eat and what your climate is like. In many areas, you will need some protection - cloches etc. possibly even to germinate seed  :)
As a Scot, I'm afraid I live on deep fried Mars bars and haggis, so I'm not the best person to advise.
Plenty of folk will be able to help though  :)

It depends where you are and how exposed is your garden but you could try sowing some salad leaves and quick crops like pak choi and other Chinese leaves.

I'm about to plant out some purple sprouting broccoli I sowed in late spring and I have bought plugs of broccoli, curly kale and Savoy cabbage to plant out for winter cropping.

Have a look at this info from the RHS - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/grow-your-own/in-month/august

  • I have just sown some more swiss chard, some French black radish and some white moolis and 2 weeks ago some more beetroot.
Have a look at the following for more ideas.

There's quite a bit of leafy stuff that will still be ok. Winter lettuces, oriental leaves and mustards, spinach. Much of what we sow now for 'winter' will overwinter as small plants for a strong, early harvest next spring. Spring greens, chard, salad onions etc.

It's late for sowing winter brassicas (kale and purple sprouting) but you may be able to find plants still.
  • Thanks everyone 😁 I sowed cavelo Nero and red kale back in March, so they can stay in. What about things like leeks, when do they go in?

I sow my leeks and onions on the 19th February.

Leeks need sown before the end of April.

Round here they're selling bunches of pencil sized leeks for planting out now.

My spring plantings have all been harvested and the next lot will be ready in a week or three.   Not planting any more tho as I need all available space for my brassicas, especially PSB, and the garlic and broad beans I'll be planting in November/December.

  • I’ll look out for the leeks, thanks 😁 Which type of garlic will you be planting and when will the broad beans be ready?

The broad beans will be ready next spring.  In mild winters I've had crops from end April but last winter was cold and wet followed by a cold, dry April so no beans till May.   I buy whichever garlic is available here and that won't be the same as in the UK.
