When it's not computer generated, you can sometimes even work out the accent of the person transcribing by the spelling of the errors when they are trying to keep up with the speaker.
What is don't understand is why in live broadcasts, they don't use text and common abbreviations. Then they wouldn't get so far behind.
I have a hearing problem and use subtitles as a back up but live, it's a waste of time.

I also never watch any programme live because of the backing up.
It must be very difficult to transcribe live speech as you never know exactly what is about to be said, so even with text or common abbreviations it must be problematical.
A few years ago I also had problems because DVD recorders would not record programme subtitles. Then in 2010 I got a Humax Freeview playback Digital TV Recorder PVR-9150T 160GB Twin Tuner PVR
It is still going strong after 11 years!
I can record 2 programmes simultaneously and watch another on the TV at the same time, all with subtitles.

We’ve got a Humax as well, only 2 years old,  got it in replacement for Sky,  got most channels but just a one off payment.
Its not as good as @madpenguin though, I can record 2 channels but can only watch a recorded one at the same time, not one on tv.

How do you find two things you want to watch that are on  at once? I have difficulty finding one!

Nothing on the ordinary tv channels but I like Sky Arts,  talking pictures for nostalgia and several documentaries on all sorts of subjects.
