Friend or foe?!

Hi folks.  Please see attached two photos of a plant/weed/tree/not sure! - that's in my border.  It's been there for at least a year but I never let it flower, I always cut it back.  It's got some curious  - what I call 'subleaves' - at intervals along the stalk!  It's getting quite tall, as you can see.  I'd be really grateful if anyone could help identify it, please.  Many thanks in advance.  :)

I may well be wrong, but it looks a lot like the cherry saplings that pop up around my garden.  Do you have any cherry or plum trees nearby?

  • Hi @borgadr and @Fairygirl;  apologies for the delay in replying and huge thanks for getting back to me and shedding some light on what my mystery plant is.  @borgadr...ha ha, that did make me laugh about being right about being wrong....you're still right one way or another!  Thanks again both for your help.  :)

No problem @linzijayne74. I suppose what we should have said is - don't leave it in there!  :D

  • Many thanks @Fairygirl.  I shall take it out but with a very heavy heart; I really and truly don't like taking things out if they've chosen to be there but you're right, upon reading about the growing habit of this tree it sadly can't stay there; there just isn't the room in our garden.  Thanks again so much for your help.  :)

I'm afraid you learn as you go along that, in a cultivated garden [especially if it's small] you often have to be ruthless   :)
I'd be overrun with sycamore and ash here if I didn't remove seedlings and saplings. I'd be struggling to have much else growing at all if I didn't  ;)

Absolutely.  I think my garden would become part cherry orchard and part ash+oak copse if I didn't go around pulling up tree saplings.
