No, it's just a bit of vocabulary-based pedantry.

My last dig looked very similar.

It beat the mattock (handle snapped whilst levering) and the pick (handle snapped whilst levering) and got me through three blades on the oscillating saw that I used on roots too deep for the mattock. Three afternoons later, the stump was out. It now sits in the garden as a trophy.

...and I was only doing it as a favour for my neighbour.
Your iron bar is for levering.  😉

I use a slaterer's hammer. it's mattockish but with a shorter handle which isn't yellow.  If leverage is needed, I wedge a long thing underneath.. The shorter handle means you can get up close and personal with your adversary.
Can I join, or must I buy a real mattock?
    In London. Keen but lazy.

    I think you qualify @B3

Our emblem is a short handled mattock after all.

I’d even let claw hammer and crow bar aficionados in.

Crow bars and mattocks go together like peaches and cream.  Loosen with the mattock, heave out with the bar.

Peaches and cream. That’s made me hungry @Lyn

Although growing up it was tinned “fruit cocktail” and evaporated milk!

Mine is a girly short-handled mini mattock. I am considering a crow bar, though.
