Magnolia tree issue

So I got a new magnolia tree this year and now find my leaves seem to be eaten by something if any one could shed any light on what might be wrong or how to fix it  I have added a picture of the leaves to show what is happening

Vine weevils are usually the ones causing that type of damage on this side of the pond.

Thank you I will look into them and see if I can see anything on the plant I think I might have a rummage in the compost to

I think you have slug damage, too. Did the plant have the stems cut like that when you bought it? It looks very poorly and I cannot see where it is meant to grow from.

Oh dear. I agree with @Posy. Looks like a lot of slug/snail or caterpillar damage. It's in very bad condition altogether.
When you consider the time of year, there's very little foliage at all [and I don't mean because of the leaves that have been eaten] and that isn't good. That middle stem looks broken rather than pruned too.  :/
Where did you buy it from? I hope you didn't pay a lot for it.

Hi thanks your replies it came like that and think it was bought from Thompson and Morgan as my wife bought it

They really aren't great for that type of thing. They're not growers as such, so they don't have control over the plants/shrubs they sell - those come from outside sources.
They're fine for seeds and bulbs.  :)
I'm afraid I wouldn't have been happy receiving a plant in that condition. If they don't accept there's any problem, you'll just have to try and nurse it along and keep your fingers crossed.

    Are Magnolia always grafted?

Not that I know of @Lyn
You're right - it does look as if there's a graft down there. Hard to see because of the big stake.

I don't think so. I have a Stellata and  a Leonard Whatsisname and I don't think either is grafted. I could be wrong....

I have both of those as well, just wondered if there were any.
I suspect that’s not a Magnolia at all. Those leaves look very wide and dark.
