I'm with Ergates on this, I'd go with the beer/chocolate option as well.
North East Somerset - Clay soil over limestone

    You wouldn't buy a bottle of scotch for a teetotaller. A non-gardener doesn't want a plant
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Why not get something for their kiddies. A bowling game or similar that can be used in the garden

I like to give to plants, even to non-planty people.
Maybe a house plant might be easier to look after. A pelargonium that would be happy inside or out?
  • I'm sure you expressed your appreciation at the time.
I'd suggest that's more than sufficient and it's likely they don't expect anything more than that.
Buying gifts as a "thank you" for a relatively minor thing can sometimes make the recipient feel awkward.

I don't see the point of buying a non gardener a plant. Pressure to succeed right away!
I'd agree with @bcpathome - something for their children might be the answer. Buckets and spades or a sandpit [or both]  if they're young, for example.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thank you for your helpful comments, all taken on board.  The neighbour's 7 foot tall shrub was cut right back and half of it gone - they did lose some privacy on their side but resolved that now.  The shrub will grow back eventually so a good relationship with neighbour is important. Keeping it sweet, a box of chocolates will suffice... and forget the beer might be awkward gesture ;)
