I'm sure you expressed your appreciation at the time. I'd suggest that's more than sufficient and it's likely they don't expect anything more than that. Buying gifts as a "thank you" for a relatively minor thing can sometimes make the recipient feel awkward.
I don't see the point of buying a non gardener a plant. Pressure to succeed right away! I'd agree with @bcpathome - something for their children might be the answer. Buckets and spades or a sandpit [or both] if they're young, for example.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thank you for your helpful comments, all taken on board. The neighbour's 7 foot tall shrub was cut right back and half of it gone - they did lose some privacy on their side but resolved that now. The shrub will grow back eventually so a good relationship with neighbour is important. Keeping it sweet, a box of chocolates will suffice... and forget the beer might be awkward gesture
