Is there a weed killer….

….that can be used under a leylandii hedge to get at the brambles and ivy etc that is creeping along the bottom of it and, in some cases, up and out of the top of it?

The hedge is well established and big (6 feet high and 5 wide).

In some places I can get under to snip or try to pull up but in other places I have no “in”.

Just wondering what my options may be.

Thanks.

I somehow doubt it, James, but regularly cutting back those for which you do have an 'in' will deprive the root stock of its nutrients and stunt its growth.  If you can follow that up with one of the treatments that are supposed to kill right back to the roots, once you've pruned them, I think that'll be your best option.

If you put the product in a wide necked container,  then stuff the cut  end of the brambles etc into it. Leave a few days/ week the weedkiller will track back and kill the root.  It's slow and painstaking you need to be careful to avoid spilling it or getting it on you.  Make sure that no animals or children can get at it.

Another possibility I've read on here is to put a shoot in a plastic bag, spray the weedkiller into the bag, and tie it on.

I'm sorry this hedge at your new house is causing you so much stress...

    Thanks all.

It’s just something I’ll have to tackle as best I can.

I do want to keep the hedge for now as it seems to work especially sitting here on my sofa. Hedge and then the trees and fields in the distance. I’m not sure a fence would look as good.

I suppose if I did get rid of it and put up a fence I could put climbers up it.

For now I will try your suggestions and see where I am this time next year.

Yeah it’s the other sides where I have the battles @Dovefromabove

Snowberry, bramble and ivy one side and bindweed the other.

I’ve tried the bag and weed killer trick this afternoon. I’ve also ordered a mattock which will hopefully help where I can’t get a spade in….

I've been renovating my garden and my new mattock is possibly the most fun thing I've bought this year. Welcome to Mattock Club. (First rule of Mattock Club appears to to be talk incessantly about Mattock Club. You can find how-to videos on Youtube which are positively evangelical about them.)
