Holes on leaves of potted hostas

My potted hostas have developed these holes on the leaves. I have done a bit of googling (including on these forums) and it appears that these were caused by slugs. However I can find no sign of any slugs on or under the pot, or indded any of its neighbours. It's otherwise a beautiful plant. Could these holes be caused by…

Tip the pots gently onto their sides … the b*****s will even curl up and hide in the drainage hole. How they get out I have no idea … but they can and they do 😡
