My experience with tall peas matches that of @Skandi
Last year I grew a heritage variety (Lord Leicester) and did get a small 2nd crop while the mildew was setting in.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Peas! Have tried to get so many seeds to germinate this year and the result has been...nil.
Started again and again indoors so that we could plant out.
    Better but not the full.
This happened last year and so we are thinking why are we bothering.
Dwarf french beans are very successful.
Are pea seeds not as good as they used to be?

I've had horrible issues with pea seeds not germinating inside and out. Last year I got about 30% germination over 3 sowings. This year I sowed a bit thick and very deep for  me (5cm) We then had the wettest and coldest May in 30 years and germination was nearly 100% on one variety and on my own saved seeds, however the leftovers from last years packet had about the same 30% germination as they had last year.
They do seem very hit and miss.

Growing Sugar Ann first time, and Douce Provence found that reliable. Just sown blauwschokker, started growing them 3 years ago, don't laugh because the pods and flowers are so pretty. Note to self for next year, use the left hand bed. It's new part shade you don't get so much problems with mildew

Have been growing Annabell dwarf beans for years a really good cropper,kg from each little plant. This year, last years seeds, still in date, only one has germinated. Same compost, same green house, the blauwschokker,up in 3 days!
