    PS Many old time remedies had stood the test of time long before they got to the likes of me.  I added the idea of spraying with CLEAN water after the rhubarb solution, not that I ever did that, but you don't eat the bit you'd spray anyway, i.e. the pods of broad beans (or peas).  We always used a standard treatment for colds when we were kids but, when I bought a new bottle from the chemist the other day in case I needed it, the bottle now says 'Not for internal consumption' - after 70+ years!
