We had trellis toppers added to an existing fence and they were orange initially. They were installed in the November and by early the next Spring had weathered down considerably, after 12 months they were indistinguishable from the pre-existing fence

In my experience, leaking through doesn't happen on most types of fence panels if you're relatively careful (ie don't just chuck the whole pot of paint at the fence ;)).

If it were me, I'd agree on what paint you both like and offer to do both sides (if they went halves on the cost :))

Unless both parties are happy to tolerate the orange whilst Mother Nature decides how they will fade?

The hideous orange thankfully did fade in our garden.  Fortunately I had only used it on a pergola, and to be honest will not use the rest of the tub.  It took a year or so but it's not bad now.

@madpenguin how "quickly" would you say is quickly?! A few months or a couple of years?

I would say it tones down within a year.
Really depends where the fence is,sun or shade.

@madpenguin the fence panels are in the shade so I expect it will take a while!
  • Thanks. I'll certainly ask them as I didn't think that stain would run through. I'm sure they won't object as they are also not keen on the orange.
It's bound to bleed through, I would agree on colour with neighbours to avoid annoying them better and orange fence than a red-faced neighbour.

Update: spoke to the neighbours who are happy for us to stain or paint it. Fortunately, the stain we found has toned down the orange to a lovely silvery grey which happens to match the weathered fence panels on the other side. Not so great is the prospect of 12 metres of fence panels to stain! Thanks everyone who posted advice.

    Hi @frijolitas ,
I am on a similar quest to tone down an orange fence. Which stain colour did you find that resulted in silvery grey? This is what I'd like to achieve.
    Thanks!
