What are these? Could these be snail or slug eggs?

ErgatesErgates Posts: 2,953

Found these on top of the soil in the pot containing my new Hosta. Small, round, pale green, and sort of squish/ pop if I squeeze them.
Any ideas? I was checking for slugs this morning, but don’t know if these were already there when I bought them two days ago.

Fertiliser capsules was my immediate thought too.

I do hope so, Dove! Paranoid already about keeping the Hostas alive!

We’ve never had munching of our potted hostas in earlier years but in the past couple of weeks we've had quite a bit of damage ... some of the hostas are in quite large pots, so I needed OH's help to move them ... and we found three slugs living under the pots ... they have munched their last hosta 🥾

IME, Slug and Snail eggs are usually transparent and will "squish" as opposed to the fertiliser granules which are opaque and tend to "pop" - apologies for the technical language  ;)

I think many of us have had a "oh my god they are slug eggs" moment, before realising they are really slow release granules. The granules are dry and crack in your fingers or create a kind of powder. They are usually perfectly spherical and beige.

The ‘eggs’ have a crisp shell, and when crushed, seem to contain a whiteish liquid. They are dry on the outside, and not slimy, so it sounds more likely that they are fertiliser granules.

I know I’m panicking! It’s just that I’ve avoided buying hostas for at least 30 years, after losing so many to slugs. And that was in the days when I would use slug pellets, which I wouldn’t now.

But I’ve always loved hostas, and these were so pretty, I got tempted and thought I would have another go.
