You haven't said what the dimensions are, but I certainly wouldn't put tomatoes round the edge. They'll get too big, and need supports, so you wouldn't be able to access the middle of the bed.

    Its a small bed - I think about 1 x 2 metres.

The only spare space I have is where its in shadow early afternoon. So perhaps wont get enough sun for tomatoes.

Yes, I think its perpetual spinach. (Someone told me that 'perpetual spinach' is 'chard', so I use those interchangeably.)

Is it?! I thought it was just a spinach variety that keeps coming back after being cut.
    Shows what I know!
Mine is about the only veg right now that is doing really well. Had some the other night in a pasta bake and it was lovely.

I agree with salads, etc spring onions are ok. Main onions have surprisingly deep roots,  they are very fine so break when you harvest them so most people think they don't have deep roots.  Brassicas need deep, firm soil and are in the ground for for a long time . I wouldn't bother with them in this situation.

Chard and perpetual spinach is really tall takes up a lot of room

.I didn't mean put tomatoes round the edge, just the strawberries
  • You could put in some salad brassicas, and other salad crops: mustards, rockets, lettuces, land cress, spinach, cress (grows bigger if you let it) ...

Perpetual spinach used to be known as 'Spinach beet' .... I think it'd need more depth ... as the name suggests it keeps on growing, and it has a tap root, hence the 'beet' in it's name.

I have a shallow planter box (also about 6 in deep) and have managed to grow pak choy and lettuce in it. Radish should be ok too.
