Clematis montana 'Broughton Star' - still no buds

I bought a Clematis montana last year and it flowered well into the autumn. It's in the Pruning Group 1 so I did not prune it back.

This year I would have expected to see some signs of life - at the moment there is nothing - no sign of buds or any growth.

Does anyone have any experience of this type of Clematis. I have some other types in the garden and they seem to be fine - it's just this one. Is this a type which is known to take a while to spring into action?

I have Broughton Star and it had small buds on it which then disappeared after heavy frosts. But it has just produced a flower, except it's single, not the usual semi double. Mine is a young one as I moved house, but I had a huge one growing into a tree at the last house. It never flowered into autumn, it always flowered in late spring, May to June.

My MIL has one, still fairly young, and it does flower much later than my Montana "Elizabeth".

I would suspect that if your Montana flowered "well into autumn" it is not a montana and not Broughton Star. Perhaps it was mislabelled. It may also be why there are yet no buds. Montanas are group ones that flower in May and June.
  • I have a Nelly Moser that I accidentally gave an incorrect fertiliser to last year, something too high in Nitrogen I think. As a result I ended up with more foliage and growth than I’ve ever had, and barely any flowers until late in the year.

Is there a chance you’ve done something similar?

This is my daughter’s Broughton Star, was yours like this?  It only flowered through April and May.

Yes - that is what it looked like. i've checked the label on it tonight - and the invoice from the supplier and that also says that it is 'Broughton Star'.

Here is a picture of what it looks like today

I have to say that it looks pretty dead to me. Personally l would cut back one of the stems and see if it's green inside, if so there's hope  :)
  • Agreed it looks like it’s a goner.

Clematis montana doesn't seem to be as resistant to late frosts as many other clematis.  I lost mine in my last garden when the Beast from the East swept through - but just C.montana.  All my other clematis were ok.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Isn't montana is unlikely to flower through late summer into autumn?
