Can't you use all of them? No slightly bare place you could slip a few in perhaps in your ornamental areas? Get the crop this year and share with friends or family if you have too much. Keep a few pods for next year too.
Suddenly all cyclists seem to be saints and all motorist the spawn of the devil. Many years ago I was walking on the pavement in front of a row of shops when somebody screamed from behind me "Get out of the f***ing way". At that point I could see the front wheel of a bike trying to get past. I moved slightly to one side then shoulder charged him as he came level with me. Rider and bike when flying into a parking bay with the rider eating tarmac! I had absolutely no regrets about doing that then and would happily do the same again in a similar situation.
Good cyclists, and good motorists, are those who abide by the rules, not by the rules which suit them.
I agree good motorists and cyclists obey the rules. I bet I can find more such cyclists than you can motorists simply because most motorists do not know even half of the highway code that applies to them. Rules are more than just the ones you can lose your licence for there's the excellent but non enforced rules in the highway code. Most of them people simply ignore. If they really obeyed them then both driving and cycling would be safer.
Of course nobody are all saints and all sinners but there's a good reason why most cyclists are likely to be closer to sainthood than demon and that is simply because they are more vulnerable than most road users. No metal cage to protect cyclists. That very protective cocoon for motorists tend to be at least part of why motorists do drive without consideration for more vulnerable such as cyclists and pedestrians.
BTW it is more than a little ignorant to put cyclists against motorists. Not least because many do both. My posts have simply been to try and explain why there's a potential good reason for cyclists riding the way they do. There is a thing called defensive riding.
For example a lot of drivers see the place for cyclists as being as close to the kerb as possible. However all modern cycling guidance describe primary and secondary positions. It is derived from motorcycle training. Secondary is to the left of the lane. It's the position you ride in when it is safe. There's primary which you ride in when you are not in a completely safe stretch of road. It's in the middle of the lane, you are seizing the lane just like a motorbike rider. In fact cycle training teaches you to take primary if in doubt. I even believe it's in the highway code.
One last point do you know how to overtake cyclists? What gap do you leave? Current advice is 1.5m or 1m in cities. That's European guidance but HC basically states same gap as you give cars. IIRC the graphics show the overtaking car in the opposite lane in the exact same position as they would be when overtaking a car not half in and half out of the same lane. Other points include giving cyclists more space because they might need to make sudden movements to avoid hazards such as potholes or debris. If a cyclist looks over their shoulder there is a rule stating you should give them more space and hold back as they might be about to n make a turn or manoeuvre.
These things are all actions I've rarely seen. It's like people don't know these things.
As I said before most drivers and cyclists are responsible. It's the minority that get noticed for irresponsible driving/cycling. However it's the minority that gets noticed more often than the majority. Same for many other walks of life. Such as neighbours. People tell stories of neighbours who don't take bins in or other transgressions, but they don't say about those who do the right thing. How many times have we criticized others compared to complimenting others? It's possibly a form of othering in many cases. Find fault to criticise so you can justify treating them less fairly. Daily mail is very good at this with cyclists. There's been a few cases where it they'd treated say disabled people the way they treated cyclists in their paper there would be a case in law to prosecute them over I believe. They've certainly sailed close to the wind with their rag.
My newish phone doesn't have proper ring either. I just want a ring ring. -classy I had an old one with the North by Northwest in the sunflower field tune. Speaking of politicians being very honest about how much they're being dishonest; why does there need to be a pop-up on every website saying "We respect your privacy so here is how we're harvesting and selling your private information."?
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
@kt53 I think you need to look at your behavior. You feel it was appropriate to physically assault an individual who swore at you? Had it been someone jogging behind you who shouted at you would you of pushed them too or is it just cyclists you feel are fair game? The cyclist you mention was obviously an idiot but your reaction is not one to be proudly boasting of. Good citizens are also ones who follow the rules and don’t assault people.
Morning folks up at 6msfly busy day yesterday, taking dogs on the beach First, gotta go shopping, loath shopping. Actually out of milk/! Lot of stuff to plant, played chess with kitchen window sill conservatory and green houses yesterday, haven't even down my runners and dwarfs yet. We cycle, drive, used to ride horses, walk dogs, try to be reasonable to everyone who deserves it. Last time we went to Chelsea flower show, walking back to Victoria station I am crossing, green man,red light, bloke about 50 straight through on a bike, I had to jump out of the way, told him the light was red,he screamed abuse at me
Well you only have to look at how people won't bother with social distancing at the moment to see just how self involved they are. We were out walking this weekend with the kids and 90% of people couldn't be bothered to make the slightest effort to give other people some space. Pedestrian, cyclist or driver it doesn't matter, they're all equally selfish. Just be part of the polite 10% and don't let them drag you down to their level.
