Sowing seeds

Hi,  I sowed Salvia summer jewel nearly 5 weeks ago and left on a window sill.  Nothing has come up yet. Do I need a heated propagator?

Thank you

Fred

I used  heated propagator for several seeds that said they need heat, found things   went leggy quickly dried out too fast, haven't bothered since. I haven't grown salvia be from seed,so unsure how long they normally take to germinate, sorry
  • Ok, thank you.

Fred, try putting a piece of cardboard over them, maybe the dark will get them going,

Quite a few seeds respond to the airing cupboard treatment.

Some seeds need light, some need to be covered.  Some seeds need bottom heat to get them going and some don't.  Some germinate quickly but some can take months and some need to be conned into thinking they've had a winter before they'll germinate and there are some seeds from SA and Oz plants that won't germinate till they think there's been a bush fire so you need smoke.

Always best to read the packet instructions or the leaflet sent by the supplier to see what your seeds need.

  • Ok thank you. I'll try covering or is it too late now? Don't have an airing cupboard.

They don’t need any special treatment, I’ve  always grown from seeds, can’t say I remember them taking 5 weeks though.
Always worth a try, nothing lost.

  • Ok thank you. My other seeds which did take I started leaving them outside during the day but I think I left them outside too long. 😭
