I've just finished reading a novel set in Scotland around 1700, and in the author's notes she states that "gotten" was still commonly used in Scotland at that time, but her characters use "got" to avoid the inevitable accusations of americanism. (The Vanished Days by Susanna Kearsley, if anyone's interested)
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
Interesting. For me, it really stood out. Not sure how recently a Brit would have used the word gotten in the circumstances? I had a similar problem with a character who ‘wrote’ her cousin, rather than ‘wrote to’.
